Hotel booking abandonment: why guests leave and how to win them back
A guest who reaches your booking engine has already chosen your hotel. If they leave before paying, they usually book you anyway, just through an OTA that takes a commission. Here is where that leak happens and how to plug it.

How big is the problem?
Hotel-specific figures vary a lot depending on who measures them and how, so we prefer to stick to sources we can check. Two are useful.
First, SiteMinder's Changing Traveller Report 2025, a survey of 12,000 travellers across 14 countries, found that 52% had abandoned an online booking because of a bad experience. That is not a niche complaint; it is most of your potential guests.
Second, Baymard Institute, which has studied online checkouts for years, puts the average documented cart abandonment rate at 70.22%, based on 50 studies. Hotel booking engines are a checkout like any other, with the added complication of dates, room types and rate plans.
Some abandonment is natural. People compare dates, check with a partner, or are simply browsing. The goal is not zero; it is removing the reasons that push ready-to-book guests away.
The six reasons guests walk away
1. The price goes up at the last step
In Baymard's research, the most common reason for abandoning a checkout (excluding people who were just browsing) is extra costs such as fees and taxes being too high, cited by 40% of shoppers, and 12% left because they couldn't see the total cost up front. For hotels, the usual culprits are resort fees, cleaning charges, service charges and city taxes that appear only on the payment page.
This is now a compliance issue in two of our biggest markets. In the US, the FTC's Rule on Unfair or Deceptive Fees, in force since 12 May 2025, covers hotels and short-term rentals and says mandatory fees such as resort fees must be included in the total price shown up front. In the UK, the drip pricing provisions of the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 took effect on 6 April 2025 and require the total price, including unavoidable charges, to be shown; the CMA can fine up to 10% of global turnover (summary from Boyes Turner). 2. The booking engine is slow or awkward on a phone
Calendars that are hard to tap, pages that reload between steps, and pop-ups that cover the "Book" button all add friction. Test your booking path on a mid-range phone over mobile data, not on office Wi-Fi.
3. Too many steps and fields
Baymard found 17% of shoppers abandon because checkout is too long or complicated, and 18% because they are forced to create an account. Guests should be able to book as a guest; ask only for what you actually need to confirm the stay.
4. The hand-off doesn't feel safe
19% of shoppers in Baymard's data left because they didn't trust the site with their card details. Many booking engines send guests to a page with different colours, a different domain and no logo. Matching your branding, using a clear secure payment step and showing your cancellation policy before payment all help.
5. Unclear cancellation and payment terms
Travellers want to know what happens if plans change. Spell out the difference between flexible and non-refundable rates in plain words, and say when the card will be charged.
6. Their preferred payment method isn't there
International guests may expect Apple Pay, Google Pay or PayPal. Baymard found 9% abandon because of too few payment options, a meaningful share when every booking matters.
A booking-path audit you can run this week
Before you change anything, find out where people actually drop off. Most booking engines and Google Analytics 4 can show the funnel from search to confirmation, provided cross-domain tracking is set up correctly. Then walk through the path yourself with this checklist.

Win back the guests who still leave
Even a perfect booking engine will see people leave. A few low-effort recovery tactics:
- Abandoned booking emails. Many booking engines can email guests who entered an address but didn't finish. Keep the message helpful: their dates, the room they looked at, and a direct contact. Make sure you have a lawful basis to send it under your local privacy rules (UK GDPR, for example).
- Make it easy to ask a question. A visible phone number, email or chat link on the booking page catches guests who are unsure about a detail.

- Retarget with care. If you run ads, show visitors who reached the booking engine the same dates and room they viewed, not a generic brand ad.
When the problem is the booking engine itself
