Google tests AI Mode: search is becoming a conversation
Google is testing a search experience where you ask follow-up questions and get one written answer with links. The ten blue links are not gone, but they are no longer the whole story.

Key takeaways
- On 5 March 2025 Google upgraded AI Overviews in the US with Gemini 2.0 and introduced AI Mode as an experiment in Search Labs.
- AI Mode answers complex questions in a chat format and supports follow-up questions.
- Longer, more specific questions favour pages that answer them directly and clearly.
- Businesses with thin pages and inconsistent details risk being left out of the answer.
"Where can I get a quiet brunch for six with a high chair, near the station, before 11?" That kind of question used to need five searches. Google wants it to need one.
What happened
As FoneArena and Nasdaq reported, Google brought Gemini 2.0 to AI Overviews for harder questions such as coding and maths, made Overviews available to more users, and opened AI Mode to Google One AI Premium subscribers through Labs. AI Mode uses a technique Google calls "query fan-out" — running several related searches at once and combining the results.
What it means for businesses
- Detail wins. Pages that answer specific questions (parking, accessibility, dietary options, group sizes) give AI something to quote.
- Your Google Business Profile is part of the answer for local searches, alongside your website and reviews.
- Clicks change shape. Fewer quick-answer clicks, but visitors who click through are more ready to act.
- Measurement gets harder. Watch enquiries and bookings, not just traffic.
What to do now
| Step | Example |
|---|---|
| Write the questions customers actually ask | "Do you have parking?" "Can I bring my dog?" |
| Answer them on your pages in one or two sentences | A short FAQ on each service page |
| Keep facts identical everywhere | Hours, address, phone on site and Google profile |
| Track enquiries by source | Ask "how did you find us?" on your form |
