Google is unusually open about this. Its help page on improving your local ranking says local results are “mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity”, then defines prominence as “how well-known a business is”. Relevance is how well your profile matches the search, and distance is how far you are from the searcher or the place they named.
The same page states that businesses “with complete and accurate info are more likely to show up in local search results”, and that verified profiles are more likely to appear. That is the practical brief for a small property: be accurate, be complete and give Google plenty of evidence that people know and like you.
Get your Google Business Profile right for lodging
Lodging profiles work a little differently from shop or restaurant profiles. Google's guide to getting started with a Business Profile for your hotel explains that verified owners edit services and amenities in a dedicated “Hotel attributes” section, and that hotels can't edit opening hours because they are open around the clock for guests. Google may also show a hotel class rating, and if yours is wrong or missing you contact support.
Name, category and address
Google's guidelines for representing your business are strict. Your name “should reflect your business's real-world name”, so “The Harbour House” is fine, but “The Harbour House – Best B&B Cornwall Sea Views” risks suspension. Choose the category that describes you (hotel, bed & breakfast, guest house, motel) and don't add “Restaurant” to a hotel profile. A Business Profile alone won't put your nightly rate in Google's hotel results. Google's Business Profile help says hotel prices and booking links come from Google Hotel Ads and its booking links programme. According to Google's Hotel Center help on booking links, they show your site or hotel name with the room rate for the chosen dates and send the traveller straight to your landing page, and Google doesn't charge for them. So the first step for most small properties isn't a Google account at all: ask your booking engine or channel manager whether they're a Google connectivity partner and whether your property is switched on. Then check that the rate Google shows matches the rate on your site.
Holiday lets follow a similar path. Use exactly the same name, address and phone number (NAP) on your website footer, Business Profile, booking engine, OTA listings and tourism board pages. Small differences, like an old landline or “Flat 2” on one site and not another, make it harder for Google to be confident it's the same place.
A genuine “where we are” page
Write one strong page about your location: how far you are from the station, beach, venue or hospital people travel to; parking and arrival notes; and your own recommendations for walks, pubs and day trips. This is local content no OTA can copy, and it helps you match searches like “guesthouse near the Eden Project” or “hotel walking distance to the MCG”. Don't create thin pages for every town within 30 miles.
Hotel and LodgingBusiness schema
Structured data tells search engines plainly what your page describes. Schema.org's markup guide for hotels lists specific types for BedAndBreakfast, Campground, Hostel, Hotel, Motel and Resort, with LodgingBusiness as the general type. Useful properties include amenityFeature, checkinTime, checkoutTime, numberOfRooms and starRating.
